If we heat water, it vaporises.
If a man always eats a lot, he gets fat.
As seen above, zero conditionals expresses general truth or fact. In a zero conditionals sentence, the verb in both clauses are in the simple present tense.

Exercise 1. Complete these sentences, using the correct form of the verbs in the box.

Study the example.

If my father gives me enough money , I will/can buy this camera.
conditional clause             main clause

= Perhaps my father will give me enough money to buy this camera, but I am not sure.

As you see, we use if+present to express something needed to make something else possible or not, or something on which another thing depends. In the main clause will, can, may, must etc. Can be used according to the situation.

Exercise 2 Make conditional clauses with if, combining the pair of sentences.

1  He may stop smoking. He will be healtier.
If he stops smoking, he will be healtier.

2  You can work regularly. You may be successful.
3  We may walk faster. We will arrive at schooll before teacher begins
4  The young may listen to their parents reccomendation. They wont have any big problems.
5  Tom may not pay his tax just in time. He  has to pay a fine.
6  We may not go to his birthday party. He will be unhappy.
7  It is possible for a reason to build a house illegally. It will be pulled down by the local authorities one day.
8  Jane may always eat a lot. She will get fat.
9  They may travel by plane.They will save time.
10  It is possible for a company to refuse to pay a reasonable pay rise. Workers will strike.

Exercise 3. Choose the correct form of the verb.

1  If we aren’t in a   hurry, we miss / will miss the bus.
2  Will you go to the party if you had  been invited / are invited ?

Unless = if ……….. not
Study the examples.

Unless you hurry, you will miss the train.
= If you do not hurry , you will miss the train.

Unless you obey traffic rules, you may cause a traffic accident.
= If you do not obey traffic rules, you may cause a traffic accident.

I wont go to the party unless I am invited by name.
= I wont g oto the party if I am not invited by the name.

As seen above, unless is an alternative subordinating conjunction for some conditional clauses. It has got a negative meaning, often the same as if …… not.
Unless can only be used in real conditions.

Exercise 9. Rewrite these sentences, using unless instead of if……….not.

1 If you dont hurry, you will be late for school.
2 If they dont pay their tax on time, they will have to pay some fine.
